Society of Flavor Chemists: History

The Society of Flavor Chemists is a not for profit organization devoted to the advancement of the field of flavor technology and related sciences by encouraging the exchange of ideas through meetings, lectures and symposium.

Society of Flavor Chemists

Society of Flavor Chemists (SFC) members are primarily chemists and food scientists, but there are members from other backgrounds as well.

Flavor chemists (also known as flavorists), develop flavors for a wide variety of food and pharmaceutical products, using creative and artistic talents along with various analytical tools including gas and liquid chromatography.

The greatest concentration of our members are located on the east coast (New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia) with the bulk of the remainder in the Midwest (Chicago, Milwaukee, Cincinnati) and California.

Flavor Collection

Mr. Earl Merwin, a charter member of The Society of Flavor Chemists, donated his private collection of flavor reference materials in 1999 which formed the foundation of The Society of Flavor Chemists’ Library.  The collection originally was housed at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, PA until October 2016.  The Society donated the flavor collection to the Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer Library of Chemical History in Philadelphia, PA, in October 2016. The collection may be viewed in the Othmer Library's online catalog by clicking the following link: Society of Flavor Chemists Collection.
