Dear Institute staff and fellows,
For the time being our operations will aim to have minimal person-to-person contact, but we are still here to help with library needs. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm a library staff member will be available to pull modern books and answer reference questions. We are also offering to scan articles from our journals and chapters from our books for those of you that cannot come into the building. You might not see us but that is by design to keep contact to a minimum, library staff will not be at the reading room desk but instead in our offices during library hours. Please call, I.M. or email us if you need help.
Get books: request from the catalog at https://othmerlib.sciencehistory.org/. We will pull the items during our open hours, check them out to you, and place them with a pickup slip in the reading room for you to retrieve at your convenience. (email Ashley if you do not know your library card number)
Take books home: Since many of us will continue to work remotely, you may take modern secondary resources home for research, generally this will be books published after 1975. As always, patrons are responsible for the cost of replacing lost or damaged books.
Return books: There will be a box in the reading room to put returned books into, this box will be quarantined before library staff processes any items inside (note that your returned books will not be processed for 24-48 hours so will still be on your record.)
Request scans: Email email@example.com to contact the librarians with your citation and request. We will try to be timely with these requests but don't know what sort of volume to expect at this time. Note that copyright, condition of materials and staff time may affect what and how much can be scanned from an item.
Reference consultations: Email Ashley with reference questions or research help, we can set up a virtual meeting to discuss library resources.
Rare books and archives: We are only able to accommodate one researcher at a time right now so please contact the collection curators for an appointment and the library staff will coordinate to accommodate your request. Specific procedures will be explained during scheduling.
External patron appointments: Right now we are unable to accommodate researchers that are not staff or fellows. If an external researcher asks you about our library then please have them contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org so that we can arrange document delivery or a virtual reference meeting.
